The body is the agent

Thus, living beings might be understood as a remarkable kind of organisation of matter: a bounded, metabolically open, self-maintaining form that gives rise to purposeful, intelligent action. This is key to understanding both the skills of our flesh, and why we can think of ourselves as being β€˜deskilled’ today. When we recognise that our bodies are intrinsically intelligent in their organisation, we don’t need a conscious agent beyond the flesh. The body is the agent from which intelligence emerges and also, in the fullest sense, who we are.
